So, as of late I've gotten into the weird habit of not sleeping until at least 3 or 4am looking up various language videos on youtube/reading articles about linguistic devices and so on on Wikipedia. Tonight was no different; plagued with worries about my upcoming Turkey trip (I admit that I am super neurotic, that is how I am wired), I got back up out of bed to google and write down some Turkish phrases when I am there, just to get some peace of mind.
After that was done I began my usual wiki-hopping. I started with "Turkic languages" and ended up at "Tourism in Bulgaria", while simultaneously youtubing "norwegian interviews" "norwegian conversations" "reading danish" "swedish tv", you get the gist. I always heard that they speak somewhat 'hurdy-gurdy-gurdy' (or as my friend put it, "burk de girp de furp") up there but upon hearing all three languages in close timeframes, I decided all of them sound like super happy retarded German. Like they moved up north and took up drinking from the lack of sunlight and that loosened their tongues a bit.
Anyway, referring back to the title of this post, rapping in other languages. I came across this little gem, and almost died:
AUSTRIAN RAP!
It reminds me of New Zealand hip hop videos; low production value and the girls are homely. They have that "is your sister free next Saturday we're shooting our video" vibe about them. My favourite at 2:39 wants to blend in with the other rap bitches but alas, self-awareness gets the better of her and she's left biting her lip thinking "oida...at least this won't go viral."
WELL NOW THAT IT'S ON MY BLOG, MILLIONS WILL SEE IT. Shaaaaame.
I don't know if there's much point in German rapping. At any rate to mine nicht-so-fließend ears, it just sounds like them speaking normally. Except in shorter spurts.
After this I realised the potential hilarity of rap in other languages. I typed in "russian rap" and this was the first result:
Verdict: More ethical variety amongst the hos, but bar the Russian ghetto superstar element (no worse than their American counterparts and too obvious to be of novelty anyhow), kind of disappointing, actually. Russian is a sufficiently punchy language and it kinda suits being rapped in. Who knew? Also, more rap videos should feature Maltese dogs.
Moving on.
FRENCH RAP.
There are many things I can imagine the average French person (as I see them in my head) rapping about. Hardened baguettes. Canine excretion befouling the streets. Those damn touristes! But I am le tired. etc. All fair enough points of rage but you know you chose to live in Paris so whatever, yknow?
Suffice to say I was pleasantly surprised to find a female rapper who actually sounded, well, real fucking angry through all this! I didn't know that the French language could express (from a purely aural perspective) real RAGE (or as she says, "HAZZH!") and not have to sound flouncy and stuff. Liked the video too, reminded me of those early to mid '90s street riot footages a la Michael Jackson "They Don't Care About Us", version: Denim Shirt in Jail.
Then again, part of her rage seems to come from having a foreign background, political injustice etc so I may actually discover that AUTHENTIC French rap is about bad pastry after all.
I would like to check out Chinese rap and try to listen to Korean rap and hear just sounds and not meanings, but it's 4am, which means like, yknow, bedtime.
I wonder how much of this post made sense. Gonna post without proofreading, what!
